The War in Georgia--Battle of Chickamauga, Sept. 19 and 20, between Generals Rosecrans and Bragg

The battle of Chickamauga was the culmination of a month-long game of cat and mouse between Major General William S. Rosecrans's Federal Army of the Cumberland and General Braxton Bragg's Confederate Army of Tennessee. Played out in the sparsely settled, heavily timbered valley of north Georgia, Rosecrans tried to duplicate his success of late June 1863, when with spectacular maneuver he had pried Bragg out of his positions around Tullahoma, Tennessee, with virtually no losses and no major battle. This campaign would be different.
