Battle that occurred during June 25-26, 1876, between units of the U.S. Army's 7th Cavalry Regiment, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer, and Lakota Sioux, Arapaho, and Cheyenne warriors, led by Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, Rain-in-the-Face, and Gall. The battle, also known as Custer's Last Stand and to Native Americans as the Battle of Greasy Grass Creek, took place along the Little Bighorn River in eastern Montana and was part of the wider Great Sioux War (Black Hills War) of 1876-1877. The Battle of the Little Bighorn is arguably the most famous battle of the American Indian Wars and the most important victory by the Plains Indians over the U.S. Army.
