Battle of Antietam

Known in the North as the Battle of Antietam and in the South as the Battle of Sharpsburg, it is known today as the single bloodiest day in American military history.   This was the first invasion of the Confederates into Northern territory.   The battle took place on September 17, 1862 and lasted 12 hours.  At the end of the day, between 22,000 and 23,000 soldiers were dead.
